Why the Same Piece of Art Can Tell a Different Story to Everyone
Have you ever looked at a piece of art and immediately felt something—even though you couldn't explain why?
Maybe an image reminded you of a memory. Maybe something about it made you uncomfortable. Maybe it gave you peace. Or maybe you saw something completely different from the person standing beside you.
That's one of the things I love most about creating surreal art.
I can create a piece with an entire story living behind it. I know what I was thinking about. I know what certain symbols represent to me. I know what emotions were present while I was creating it.
But the moment I release that artwork into the world, it isn't only mine anymore.
You bring your own story to it.
We Don't All See the Same World
Two people can experience the exact same moment and remember it completely differently.
The same thing happens with art.
Our minds are shaped by memories, relationships, fears, dreams, beliefs, losses, hopes, and experiences that nobody else has lived exactly the way we have.
That's why I don't believe surreal art always needs to have one "correct" interpretation.
A floating object might represent freedom to one person and instability to another.
An endless staircase might look like possibility to someone who is hopeful and exhaustion to someone who feels like they've been climbing their entire life.
A strange landscape might feel peaceful to one person and lonely to another.
Neither interpretation has to be wrong.
Art and the Inner World
This is also one of the reasons mental health awareness is important to me as an artist.
There are things happening inside people that we cannot see.
Someone can appear completely fine while experiencing an entire storm internally. Someone else may find beauty in something another person finds frightening.
Our internal worlds influence the external world we experience.
Surrealism gives me a way to make some of those invisible worlds visible.
Instead of explaining every emotion literally, I can create a place where gravity doesn't behave normally, flowers have eyes, moons can be washed, thoughts can become landscapes, and impossible things suddenly feel completely natural.
Sometimes the impossible explains a feeling better than reality ever could.
So, What Do You See?
When you look at my artwork, I want you to know the story behind it.
But I also don't want my story to erase yours.
Before reading my interpretation, sit with the piece for a moment.
What did you notice first?
What emotion did it give you?
What memory did it pull from somewhere you weren't expecting?
What does it mean to you?
Because maybe art isn't always something we're supposed to understand.
Sometimes it's a mirror.
And every person standing in front of it sees a slightly different reflection.
